CONTEMPORANEA ACUSMATICA

Ascoltare lo Spazio / Ascoltare il Tempo

Once again our annual celebration of musical experimentation returns to Udine. This year, the 21st annual "Contemporanea" festival will be devoted to the repertoire of acousmatic music (compositions written specifically for speakers systems that project sound in 3D space).

The project has been made possible thanks to the support of the Regione Friuli Venezia Giulia, the Comune di Udine and the Fondazione Friuli.

Many of the compositions that will be performed have been selected from three different Calls for Works organized in order to create compositional and performance spaces for the contemporary repertoire (36 Nations participated in a series of initiatives, with a total of 260 pieces).

There will be four events as part of the “Acusmatica – Ascoltare lo Spazio / Ascoltare il Tempo”

Acusmonium Audior performance is the first event, to be held on October 14 at the teatro San Giorgio di Udine starting at 9.00 pm. The evening brings together compositions dedicated to the Acousmonium, a system for projecting sound into space, first created in Paris in 1974 by François Bayle. The AUDIOR mobile acousmonium, a genuine orchestra of loudspeakers with 44 speakers, was built in 2012 by Eraldo Bocca.

The selected compositions will be projected into the space using speakers with different colours of timbre, caliber and power.

Electro-acoustic and installation project: Eraldo Bocca. Interpreter on the acousmonium: Dante Tanzi.

Acousmatic Premiere,  to be held on 15 October at the teatro San Giorgio di Udine starting at 9.00 pm. This is dedicated to the performance of previously unseen compositions. This performance is dedicated to new repertoire written expressly for the occasion, and it will be possible to use up to ten different loudspeakers in the concert hall. The event is curated by Vittorio Vella.

Acousmatic Field is dedicated to sound art installations. The works have been created in relation to a specific space of the city of Udine: the deconsecrated church of San Francesco. This approach has brought the artist/composer into an intimate relationship with the sonic and spatial characteristics of the location. The event will be open to the public from 3:00 pm until late evening on the 19 October, and is curated by Andrea Vigani.

A documentary of the event will be produced.

Acousmatic Repertoire Performance is the last of the events, to be held on 21 October at the teatro San Giorgio di Udine, starting at 9:00 pm.
Thanks to the partnership between Contemporanea Festival and the Departments of Electronic Music at the Musical Conservatories of Como and Foggia, the students of the Electronic Music courses will be invited to present a spatial "interpretation” of compositions that are now considered to be cornerstones of the history of music.

The evening is curated by Roberto Zanata and Marco Marinoni, who also contributed to the overall planning of the festival with Delta productions.

The music of the festival will be captured on two CDs, available from the catalogue of TEM-Taukay Edizioni Musicali.

The invitation to participate at the twelfth edition of the international composition competition "Città di Udine" will be published during the festival. Over the years, the internationally recognized initiative has received thousands of compositions from five continents, making it one of the most important competitions in Italy.
