This edition of the Festival marks an important stage in our development over the last few years, confirming that we have been moving in the right direction. Our ambitions have been substantially increased and the numbers we are seeing confirms our aspirations: this year alone over 1000 works from 45 different countries have been entered for the international composition competition “Città di Udine” and the project “FrammentAzioni”. The competition, with 348 entries, has now become the most important Italian event in the field in terms of participants, making Udine the centre of attention for thousands of composers of cultured music. This year, thanks to the generous bequest of the heirs of the Friulano composer Piero Pezzè, who passed away in 1980, there is a new prize dedicated to his memory (for composers in the section “instrumental chamber music groups”).
A further confirmation of the interest in our work by artists can be seen in the 716 short works submitted to the project “FrammentAzioni”, a novel and unique experiment made up of music and dance. It is clear that the passion and the desire to make work have found a powerful conduit in the web, a tool we have been using since 1995 for the diffusion of our projects.
This year also sees a new initiative in parallel to the editorial and organisational activities. This is Taukay Web Radio (http://radio.taukay.it), the first internet radio totally dedicated to New Music, which allows those who cannot be present in Udine to follow the event and to listen to the musical developments in our city even if they are on the other side of the world. The evening concerts of the festival will be recorded and broadcast later on the web.
Once again this year, leading composers and musicians will be present at the festival, offering a program of the highest quality, bringing the listener a profound exploration of contemporary musical expression.
Finally we must remember the public and private institutions which continue to support our activities, a vital contribution which allows us to constantly improve our work and assist in the ongoing cultural growth of the region.
