We find ourselves in the tenth year of this great adventure. It was in 1995, cherishing an idea which proved to be successful, and full of a deep enthusiasm that I went to see the Assessorato alla Cultura of the Comune di Udine to outline the organisation of the first Concorso di musica contemporanea “Città di Udine”. Since then, thanks to the indispensable support of the Ufficio Cultura and all the other public and private bodies, there have been five editions of the biennial competition and nine editions of the connected festival. It has been a process of growth full of satisfactions and recognition, and we now see a situation with a solid base and recognition within the national and international cultural panorama.
The first of this year's events offers a concert of rare intensity. The concert sees the prestigious presence of Terry Riley, whose musical career has had a lasting mark on the way contemporary music is made, performing together with Amelia Cuni, a highly skilled expert in Hindustan Dhrupad singing.
The following evening will see a fascinating concert by the piano duo Barbara Rizzi and Antonio Nimis, talented and sharp local musicians. Their music draws in part on French music of the twentieth century and in part on the beautiful and lively musical environment of the local area.
The evening dedicated to Giacinto Scelsi, on the 100th anniversary of his birth, is divided between the words of experts in the field- who will tell us about the world of this extraordinary composer- and the sound of one of the greatest performers of his music- the pianist Marianne Schroeder. This event will be further enriched by the display of original documents belonging to the composer from La Spezia provided by the archives of the publisher “Le parole gelate”.
The final evening will see the work of Gaetano K. Bodanza, one of the most sensitive exponents of art in this region. His videos and paintings play their part in this year's offerings as a part of our idea of proposing events which are outside the established boundaries, with a view to offering a situation in which music and image blend together in a sensorial spectrum to reach the places where the deepest part of us is hidden.
Finally there will be the launch of the competition for the sixth edition of the concorso internazionale di musica contemporanea. The results obtained mark the importance of this event amongst those dedicated to cultural music, giving Udine the profile it deserves in the field of music.
