Contemporanea '98

The Municipality of Udine, in wiew of the positive response of the 1996 Edition, is happy to accept the offer of TauKay Musical Editions to organize "Contemporanea' 98". The event will take place over two successive evenings and be concluded in the attractive setting of the San Giorgio Theatre. The first evening will be devoted to a public performance of works by composers from all over the world that a qualified International Jury has chosen as winners of the 1998 Edition of the International Contemporary Music Contest "Città di Udine". The second evening will be a showcase of same of the most interesting musical production (compositions as well as performances) in the region.
"Contemporanea '98" will give the public the unique chance to enter the world of contemporarymusic. At the same time it confirms the countinuos interest that the Municipal Authority takes in this kind of initiatives, which it views as a moment of cultural development.
We are therefore proud to support this project, which makes the town of Udine a point of reference in the world of musical research.

"Contemporanea '98" is an important showcase in the field of musical research as the third millennium approaches.
This year, as always, our efforts have been directed to the creation of new opportunities for a qualified spreading in the Arts. This will be amply proved by the opening session of the event (Conductor Bernardino Beggio) which will be devoted to the public performance of the winning compositions of the Second International Contemporary Music Contest. The members of the Jury are Michele Biasutti (Composer), Bernardino Beggio (Composer and Intersemble Conductor), Bernard Fort (representing the Lyon "Groupe de Musique Vivantes"), Lucio Garau (Composer and ethnic music researcher), Marco Stroppa (composer and researcher at IRCAM in Paris) and Jesus Villa-Rojo (composer and director of the Madrid "Laboratorio de interpretacion musical").
They have selected eight pieces among the almost ninety scores and magnetic tapes which have been submitted to the competition.The higt number of entries is mainly due to the widespread circulation of the announcement of competition, which was made available through the Internet. Thanks to this powerful means of comunication it has been possible to give the initiative a worldwide echo, reaching results far beyond expectations. The second evening will be devoted to a performance of some of the best works of Contemporary Music in Friuli Venezia Giulia; esteemed musicians from this region, conducted by Paolo Longo, will perform pieces especially composed for the occasion. In particular a very welcome guest of the evening will be the Sicilian coposer Francesco Pennisi, whose presence is thus showing support for our work. We have also wanted to draw the attention on the deep links between music and visual arts by the setting up of an exhibition which can be visited during the musical performances.
