Straightening the back (2006)
Feet and eyes are at opposite ends of the human body, and
yet they seem to me to be connected in an inseparable way.
The
contact between
the earth, that which the feet trample as they walk, that
which they experience, inevitably informs my gaze. This work
collects
together
traces of walks and trajectories of the eye which overlap
over time, in places which are evermore peripheral. They
are guided,
one could
say, by a though which doesn't want to, or doesn't know how
to, “state” but
which tends to indicate the gap- sometimes inexistent, and
sometimes just difficult to decipher- between the uselessness
and the meaningfulness
of the senses, intensity.
“ Do the persistent images, beyond any necessity or logic of memory, of
every narrative development of memory, perhaps reveal a substance, a
constant element which accompanies our lives and which always attracts us without
us being fully aware of it? If that is so, then everything revolves around
very, very
few points of attraction, minerals of the symbolic which we cover with
stories and ideas until they are lost from sight, but which in hidden ways,
continue
to direct us without us knowing.”

Video, photography and multi-media installations are the primary
research tools. The work, born within the vast territory of contemporary
art,
has over the last
few years explored the borders, finding new possibilities for development
in the documentary field.
