Barbara Rizzi and Antonio Nimis, after studying
together in the advanced classes of the Argentinean concert player
Daniel Rivera, established themselves as piano duo in 1994, debuting
with the Concerto in B flat major for two pianists and orchestra
by Leopold Kozeluch.
From the start the intention of the two musicians has been to perform
and deepen the often unknown masterpieces from the repertoire for
two pianos, including the Sonata in C major “Grand Duo” op.140
and the Grande Sonata in B flat major op. 30 by F. Schubert, variations
in E flat major on Geister - Thema by Schumann op. 23 by J. Brahms,
the Sonatas of W. A. Mozart, the Cinéma - Symphonie “Le
Boeuf sur le Toit” by D. Milhaud, or those particular manuscripts
such as the aforementioned Kozeluch Concerto, the Liebeslieder
Waltz op. 52 and the Neue Liebeslieder Waltz op. 65 for vocal quartet
and two pianos by J. Brahms, the Gemini Variations for violin,
flute and two pianos by B. Britten, or the Via Crucis by F. Liszt,
version for voice and two pianos, performed in many Italian cities
on Good Friday.
Furthermore the duo has studied under the maestro Sergio Fiorentino
and the pianist Konstantin Bogino, with whom the two musicians
also often collaborate. They recently
performed the Concerto in F major K 242 for three pianos and orchestra by W.
A. Mozart with the Russian maestro. In 2002 they began, and continue to occupy
themselves today with, the artistic direction of the International Workshop of
Chamber Music " Vive le coq! A' bas l' Arlequin! ", a quadrennial festival
dedicated to early twentieth century Parisian music. This festival has generated
notable interest with both critics and the public
A CD was recently launched as part of the festival which includes some of the
most significant compositions thus undertaken both by the two performers and
with Konstantin Bogino, the violinist Lucio Degani and the clarinettist Roberto
Scalabrin. B. Rizzi and A. Nimis often perform separately as soloists in various
chamber arrangements, collaborating with internationally famous musicians. These
include, as well as the aforementioned musicians, the cellist Anatole Liebermann,
the violist Vladimir Mendelssohn, and the sopranos Miomira Vitas and Francesca
Scaini.
In a search for a more intimate relationship between poetry and music, Barbara
Rizzi and Antonio Nimis together with the famous actress Carla Manzon have organised
several shows: L' alfabeto del mondo - La rottura della tradizione (poetry by
Marinetti, Palazzeschi, Majakovskij, Rebora and Ungaretti; music by Casella and
Satie.), Il viaggio - L' inquietudine dei moderni (poetry by Goethe, Verlaine,
Rimbaud, Baudelaire, Ungaretti and Caproni; music by Schubert, Schumann, Debussy,
Milhaud and Wagner.),Entrando, un suono.... all' improvviso ! Intorno alla poesia
romantica (poetry by Leopardi; music by Chopin), Sturm und Drang: i Lieder (poetry
by Goethe, Rückert, Heine Rellstab, Müller, Claudius, Lappe; music
by Schubert), Sulle ali del Walzer ( poetry by F. Daumer and W. Goethe; music
by J. Brahms).
They are also involved in teaching piano, both as a duo and solo; Antonio Nimis,
the winner of the national competition for the seat of principal piano by the
public education authority, teaches at the “J. Tomadini” conservatory
in Udine.
