Kenneth L. Field is an American composer, based in Dillon, Montana. With advanced degrees in both Linguistics and Music Composition, his linguistics background informs his compositional choices in many of his works including fifty seven one, for sixteen vocalists (2002) (performed by the Kiev Chamber Choir on Naxos Records), The Beatitudes, for tape (2002), and Nothing is Accomplished (2018).
Both The Beatitudes and Nothing is Accomplished consist of manipulated recorded speech from multiple languages. fifty seven one, on the other hand, is written for 16 vocalists spread out in a single arc who each have individual parts consisting (for the most part) of only phonemes.
The special arrangement of the singers lends itself to spatial effects. His works Nothing Is Accomplished (2018), and Grattage for Prepared Piano, Voice, Appalachian Dulcimer & Central American Flute (2019) were choreographed by the Vytal Movement Dance Company and performed in Merce C in Spokane, Washington on May 9 & 10, 2019.
